Homeopathy Explained
Homeopathy is one of the two most widely
practised approaches to medicine available
in our world today. This system of medicine
was developed by the German doctor and chemist,
Samuel Hahnemann over 200 years ago. At present
over 30 million people in Europe alone benefit from Homeopathic treatment.
It represents a system of medicine which
is safe, effective and recognises that we
are all individual. Over 2,500 years ago
Hippocrates identified that there were two
ways of treating ill health, the way of opposites
and the way of similars.
The way of opposites (conventional medicine
or allopathy)will treat a condition with
an opposite. For example painkillers for
pain,anti-inflammatory for inflammation and
anti-histamine for allergic conditions. Often
conditions can involve taking
drugs for long periods of time and can often
have side effects too. Homeopathy works according
to the law of similars treating like with
like. This law states that
a substance which can cause a set of symptoms
can also relieve it. For example coffee or
coffea is a stimulant which can cause insomnia when used
in a minute potentised dose, as in Homeopathy, it
helps to relieve the condition.
What does the treatment involve?
The aim of Homeopathic treatment is to strengthen
our constitution, establish a balanced state
of wellbeing and achieving a state of health
which doesn't need to rely on frequent
medicine or treatment. The initial consultation
may last an hour or
more and will involve taking an in-depth
history. The homeopath will ask you about
your characteristics, previous medical history
and any other information that will help
to build up a complete picture. Subsequent
follow-up sessions may be shorter, perhaps
45 minutes or so. The homeopathic medicines
maybe provided
in liquid or tablet form and will be supplied
with appropriate instructions and information
on use. All medicines will have been prepared
without the
use of animal testing. Initially following
treatment patients often feel
a sense of wellbeing and optimism. Sometimes
symptoms may appear to worsen at first, this
represents a spring cleaning effect and is
quite normal. It may also be that old symptoms
re-appear,again this is normal and is an
important part of the healing process. Treatment
can take time, especially where conditions
have been a problem for many years,so patience
is important. More acute conditions will respond
more readily.
Homeopathy treats a full range
of conditions
and addresses the individual
on a mental, physical
and emotional level. Homeopathy

Homeopathy is effective for everyone from
babies,children, adults to women during
pregnancy. Homeopathy promotes the body's
natural ability to heal, the medicines used
are safe, non-addictive, non toxic and above
all do not involve any testing on animals.
Homeopathy can be safely used
alongside conventional
medicine. As it uses a different
philosophy
it is importantto maintain the
relationship
with your GP, it maybe that you
can safely
reduce the conventionalmedication
under medical
supervision. The two stems can
provide a
complementary service.
